Color-Tagged Structure
Site-specific installation (found wasp nest, red lacquer nail polish)
A color-tagged structure is a building whose exterior is tagged with red spray paint signifying that it is dangerous or condemned. Often these structures are soon to be eradicated to make room for new development.
Walking around Newburgh, New York prior to an exhibition, I saw many such structures around the gallery and deeply felt my own complicity in the gentrification of the neighborhood. I discovered this wasps nest in an attic where my work would be installed, and rather than remove it, I highlighted it with red nail polish, making it uninhabitable, but the intense stench reminding visitors of the violence of that act.
