The Touch, The Feel

Digital video (4 minutes)

Six adolescents play a sleepover “levitation” game, “Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board,” again and again, over the course of an afternoon. They chant for as long as they can, the speed and spacing fluctuate organically. They stop only when they lose grip on the chant, fumbling words and phrases. Transformed into a triptych that barely moves, where none of the girls can be seen chanting, the intimacy/naiveté of the original game becomes a ritualized, occult performance always on the verge of collapse. Moments of directionless, auditory chaos are interspersed with accidental synchronicity until it all simply falls apart.
